About LHC and CMS

  • Particle accelerators create collisions between particles at high velocities to generate physics events that scientists can study.

  • The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the most powerful accelerator in the world

  • CMS, one of 4 detectors in LHC, is a general-purpose detector at LHC

  • The CMS is built around a solenoid magnet to bend the paths of particles from collisions in the LHC. Accelerators are a key tool in testing our fundamental understanding of the world
